When we think of yoga, two contrasting images may come to mind. The first is of people in athletic wear dutifully attempting postures under the direction of an instructor. The other is of old men in minimal clothing, like the guru Lahiri Mahasaya below, who spent their lives mastering such postures, and also sought to achieve a kind of inner mastery whose nature is far more difficult to pin down.

Both images give correct, complementary views of yoga’s multifaceted nature. Many Westerners who practise yoga look upon it as purely a system of physical training, but others follow the yogis of the East in regarding it as partly or mainly a spiritual activity.
