The “First Winter Olympic Games” was held in Chamonix, France, though that name was not given to the event until later: it was originally called “International Sports Week 1924”. Sixteen nations competed, with Scandinavian athletes dominating in many sports. A notable exception was ice hockey, for which the gold medal went to the Canadian team after outscoring their combined opponents by 110-3 in the course of five straight victories.
