4. Days of oil and vinegar
What are “salad days”?
Your answer — B) Fasting days — was incorrect.
The phrase comes from Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra. Cleopatra, madly in love with Anthony, wonders if she could ever have loved Caesar so. She excuses herself for her past love for him on the grounds that those were, “My Sallad dayes, When I was greene in judgement, cold in blood”. Some people now use the phrase differently, however, to mean, “The time of life when one’s powers are at their peak”.
